The Noble Savage and the Little Tramp is an exhibition of works made through reductive acts in search of the basic, primal, or mechanical. Whether through an image reduced to mark on ground or a person reduced to biological imperative these works travel along similarly direct pathways, but deviate in their destinations. Amidst a global interconnectedness of ever increasing horror and complexity, they asymptotically approach a basic center, where hard meaning can reliably be found, like a rock smoothed through violent friction. The result is fragmentation without reassembly. This shedding of complication carries an edge of delusion, but knowingly so, since these are acts not of escapism but of affirmation.

Hoichi Okamoto vit au milieu des montagnes, dans la province japonaise de Nagano, dans une grande maison qu’il a construite progressivement autour d’une pièce centrale, la salle de répétition. Là, de larges miroirs, à moitié dissimulés sous des rideaux, recouvrent les murs et permettent à Hoichi de se voir lorsqu’il travaille à un nouveau spectacle. Quelques masques et marionnettes en préparation jonchent le sol au milieu de cendriers pleins, de morceaux de tissus, de coussins sur lesquels les nombreux chats de la maisons ont élu domicile. De cette pièce spacieuse cinq portes donnent vers d’autres pièces encore plus énigmatiques : l’atelier des masques, la pièce aux kimonos, la salle aux centaines de poupées....
C’est là qu’Hoichi Okamoto vit et travaille lorsqu’il n’est pas en représentation à Tokyo ou dans le reste du monde, c’est là qu’il a choisi de s’installer, loin de l’agitation des grandes villes, au milieu des rizières et des champs de pommiers où la sonnerie résonne tous les midis pour rappeler aux travailleurs l’heure de la pause déjeuner.
Sur la porte d’entrée de la maison est écrit en lettres rouges D O N D O R O. C’est le nom de la compagnie qui fut créée en 1974 par Hoichi , compagnie dont il est le seul membre et créateur solitaire de spectacles de marionnettes à taille humaine, uniques en leur genre.

C’est en découvrant les photos accumulées dans des cartons et albums que j’ai pu mieux comprendre ce que furent les premières années de représentation de ce marionnettiste si particulier. Durant les six premières années de la création de la compagnie, Hoichi Okamoto a parcouru les routes du japon à pied, tirant une énorme charrette dans laquelle se trouvaient toutes les marionnettes, masques, accessoires et autres tentures nécessaires à l’installation de ses spectacles itinérants. Choisissant souvent de jouer devant des temples et dans des conditions parfois très rudes. “Il y eut beaucoup de jours difficiles durant ces années là, la pluie, le vent , les tempêtes. J’ai appris à ne jamais m’opposer aux forces de la nature”.

Sur une photo on aperçoit Hoichi masqué, marchant dans un village, assailli par une horde de petits garçons et filles hilares, je lui demande alors si ses spectacles étaient aussi destinés aux enfants, et Hoichi me répond vivement que non. Puis je lui demande si ce monde de personnages qu’il s’est créé peuplait déjà sa propre enfance passée à Hiroshima, sa ville natale “Enfant je ne m’intéressais pas aux poupées et aux marionnettes. Celles que je fabrique aujourd’hui ne sont pas des jouets ni des symboles, mais des enveloppes humaines. Ce qui m’intéresse c’est la différence entre un corps vivant et une forme vide”.
Les marionnettes d’Hoichi m’ont souvent paru sur le point de bouger, de tourner le visage vers vous et de vous saluer, et lorsqu’une tête retombe par inadvertance, menton sur la poitrine on a parfois une sensation étrange, la poupée se serait-elle assoupie en oubliant notre présence ”Les marionnettes ne sont pas vivantes, elles ne bougent pas par elles-mêmes et ne font aucun bruit, mais c’est ce côté mystérieux de la marionnette que je veux exprimer. Cette immobilité et ce silence ont un pouvoir magique sur l’homme”.

Hoichi Okamoto est progressivement devenu un nom incontournable sur la scène internationale. Ses créations, empreintes des formes traditionnelles du théâtre Nô et bunraku japonais combinées à l’esprit du théâtre et à la danse contemporaine surprirent d’abord. Il lui fallut plusieurs années avant que ses créations ne soient saluées par la critique et que son succès arrive. Il est invité maintenant régulièrement à présenter ses spectacles aux quatre coins du monde .”Mon style est ancré dans une certaine tradition théâtrale japonaise mais tout en s’en démarquant. Il y a beaucoup de gens qui apprécient mon travail comme une nouvelle forme artistique.”

Hoichi Okamoto est un personnage insaisissable et passionné. Décrivant ses créations comme des rêves sans fin et ses personnages errant dans un labyrinthe plongé dans l’obscurité, se heurtant aux objets et aux créatures, aux morts et aux vivants.

Estelle Hanania is a French born and Paris based photographer. She has contribute in magazines such as 032C, Another Magazine, Sang Bleu, Livraison, Capricious, Sleek (...) and worked for Maison Martin Margiela, Etam and Julien Dossena...Her photos are elegant and powerful: she's definitely one talent to watch out!

Was it always your dream to pursue a career as a photographer?

I’ve been taking pictures since I was in “collège”, we (my sister and a few friends) took part in a small black and white photo workshop during lunch time. After finishing high school I was in a graphic design school where I studied art direction, and only after this I really focused on photography when I was in Paris Fine Arts school.

Who is your role model? Or the most interesting woman you met?

I don’t really have one role model, my model is whoever does things in a passionate way.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Documentaries is an artistic form that inspires me a lot; reality has a stronger impact on me and when it is directed by an inspired person that can be amazingly strong. Inspiration though can come from people I saw in the street, I’m very attentive to the people around me and I focus on faces, sometimes i just can’t stop looking at someone in the bus or subway that i find inspiring for some reason.

What was the collaboration you enjoyed the most?

Well, each time I’m working in collaboration with someone, it’s a special moment and these moments can’t compete. I enjoyed being in Switzerland with 11 men of the Silvesterchläus group, and i also enjoyed being alone with Hoichi Okamoto, very lonesome puppeteer in the japanese countryside. I also loved working with artist such as Christophe Brunnquell for Sang Bleu magazine, that was very interesting and fun too.

It looks as though your work may be inspired by movies. If so could you name a few?

Yes, I can be inspired by movies and documentaries. I saw “Streetwise” from Martin Bell recently, it haunts me since then. There are also some filmmakers that are great source of inspiration, Tarkovksi and all his movies, or Jan Svankmajer , a tcheque film director who did for example “Otesanek” and “Faust” which are incredibly surrealistic. One of my latest favorite discovery is “Deep End” from Jerzy Skolimowski a tragic love story which takes place in the 70’s in public baths and slowly slips from reality to a surreal atmosphere.

What are your favorite fanzines and magazines?

I like Maurizio Cattelan editorial projects a lot, like Permanent food, because it forces you to look somewhere else than what you’re told to. 032C is definitly a reference. I like Sang Bleu magazine a lot too. I used to read Issue Magazine, but unfortunatly it stopped a few years ago.

Is there a medium / technique that you haven't tried yet that you'd like to experiment in the future?

Yes! I’d like to paint small naïve paintings, describing very genuine scenes of everyday life...

What are your favorite places in Paris that you'd recommend to visit?

Well, what I love to do is to sit in the bus 86 from Bastille to Saint-Germain des prés, and just look through the window. I love the road.

What is the most interesting place you've ever travelled to?

Japan by bus ! I’ve seen both the countryside and cities like Tokyo, Nagano and it was a timeless trip.

Who is the woman you'd like to see featured/ interviewed here?

2 people, is that possible? Because I can’t choose...A friend of mine, the photographer Camille Vivier, with an extremely personal way of taking pictures with a great eye both into fashion and into art world.
And my twin sister, Marion Hanania, who is both an inspired shoe designer and a very talented and sensitive illustrator.
